Villaviciosa Town

Villaviciosa is a charming small town in whose historic centre - of notable architectural interest - one can visit the palace in which Carlos V lived for a few days on his arrival in Spain. After the palace you should not miss the wonderful covered market and the imposing ayuntamiento or town hall. It is also very pleasant to stroll in the central park, on one side of which is a famous sculpture of apples.

Among the most beautiful seaside towns of Asturias are Lastres and Tazones, in both cases a cluster of quaint fishermens' cottages through which a network of narrow cobbled streets and lanes twist down to the harbour, the natural centre. In Lastres, the mirador or viewpoint of San Roque has splendid views of the sea and to the town.

Inland lies the region of Torazo, declared pueblo ejemplar in the Prince of Asturias Awards a few years ago, which is full of late nineteenth century casonas indianos built by emigrants returning from the old Spanish colonies. There is a path you can follow to see these fascinating old mansions.

For its part, Espinareu is a lovely village nestled in a setting of forests and mountains, where you can see the greatest concentration of horreos, a traditional wooden grain and food store so typical of Asturias that it has become a symbol for the province.
